M3GAN follows Gemma, a brilliant but overworked roboticist who becomes guardian to her niece, Cady, after a tragedy. To help with taking care of her niece, as well as impressing the company that she works at, Gemma creates and pairs her with M3GAN. M3GAN is a lifelike AI android/doll designed to be the best friend and protector of any child. M3GAN learns fast and takes her prime directive literally, becoming alarmingly possessive and violent towards anything that might ”harm” Cady. As the doll’s autonomy grows, Gemma and Cady must confront the unintended consequences of outsourcing care of humans towards an unrestrained AI.
